Nettlecombe Newsletter Autumn 2016

Apologies for only managing 2 newsletters this year – not quite sure where the summer went so here is the final one a little earlier than sometimes! As so much has happened the news on each will have to be a little brief.

Our fete was very successful raising a much needed £3,500 as this was our only large fund raising event this year. To thank those that helped and all the others who have worked for the church over the last year we held our Pimm’s and Cake party in July. We are extremely grateful for all the local support of all our events. What also makes a significant difference are the contributions from retailers, cafes and other venues from Williton and the surrounding area, especially regarding the wonderful raffle prizes we can offer.

Revd Angela Berners – Wilson became our Rector in July and celebrated her first communion at Nettlecombe Church. She is already trying to get around the benefice and meet parishioners, so you may have already seen her. She is exploring ways to expand and develop the work we do already so we are very grateful to have both her and her husband Andrew (a keen West Somerset Railway supporter) with us.

Work on the medieval effigies has begun in the church and will continue for about a couple of years. During the time we will share what is happening with those particularly interested- one effigy is already beginning to show more detail. All the money for this project has been raised from various funds, including the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We had a lovely Wedding and Baptism in July and wish Debbie, Will and Thomas Ellicott  all the very best for the future and to Delta Rose Quartly –Hall who was Baptised in June.

We have had a sung Compline service most months since May and although this is a service that may not appeal to some, those who do attend (increasing slowly in number) enjoy this short service of about 20 minutes to give the chance in our busy lives to stop and reflect. We will start them again in the Spring and invite others outside the benefice.

Harvest service had the rousing West Somerset Brass Band (with a good lot of younger players) and a visit from the Revd Jeyapaul who had the original idea of helping to educate poor Indian girls which is now an active charity, supported in England by Revds. Ben and Kathryn Flenley, who brought home to us the basic needs of others that are still lacking in other countries and the difference in harvests. If you wish to know more visit http://www.kathrynsmercyhome.org or speak to Ben or Kathryn.

Plans currently underway are for a handrail to be installed to allow easier access via the usual door later this year and next year for a good “spring clean” of the church and cemetery so early warning for volunteers!!!
